Decoding the Indian travellers’ appetite for breakfast-inclusive stays

“Jaldi chalo breakfast khatam ho jayega” is a line you are bound to have heard at least once during your stay at a hotel. Chances are, you might have said this yourself. Nothing to be ashamed of, and you are not alone. According to a recent report by an online travel agency, India ranks third on the list of travelers who opt to stay at hotels that offer complimentary breakfast in their packages. From convenience to being an economical option, here is why 42% of Indians love their ‘breakfast included’ hotel stays.

Breakfast buffets have things like pancakes, waffles, cold cuts, and avocado on toast – food items that people may not be accustomed to in their daily lives. There is a novelty to it, and the fact that Indians often prefer value for money is why we love the bed and breakfast format, says Riaan George, a Mumbai-based content creator.

  • 42% of Indians that opted for breakfast-included hotel stays between May and June this year
  • 60% of Indians that opted for breakfast-inclusive stays during international travel
  • Taiwan (46%) topped the list of people who opted for breakfast-inclusive stays, with Vietnam (43%) coming in second, followed by India (As per a report by Agoda, an online travel platform, that analyzed travel data from Taiwan, Vietnam, India, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, South Korea, Japan, and Malaysia between May and June 2023)

It is often the flexibility to decide last minute depending on your plans during the trip, but it is worth noting that if you plan to start the day with a meal, it is often most economical to include it during the booking, says Krishna Rathi, country director at an online travel portal.

The option of exploration and convenience

“Reserving complimentary breakfast packages is common among travelers who are on a budget trip. A breakfast spread is also a hygienic dining option for those who want to explore local cuisines,” says Sachin Didolkar, director of sales and marketing at an upscale hotel in Pune. Soumitra Kundu, assistant general manager at another hotel in the city, adds, “Breakfast-inclusive packages offer convenience to guests, allowing them to start their day without having to worry about finding a place to eat or spending extra money on meals outside their accommodation.” Soumitra adds that around 40% of their guests go for a mix of cereals and milk or an English breakfast with bakery items, eggs, and sausages, and almost 60% of guests enjoy having a South Indian breakfast.
